The Future of Valuation is Already Here: What the Data Shows — and What Firms Should Be Building Now

73 Strings × IVSC survey of 1,321 valuation practitioners: where AI adoption stands, what's blocking higher-frequency valuation, and what to build before 2028.

future of valuation is already here

Insights from leaders from Apollo, Blackstone, and Hamilton Lane

Confidence is high. Infrastructure isn’t.

Seventy percent of valuation practitioners are confident they could reproduce a historical mark on short notice. Median AI use across the profession sits at 4.9 out of 10. Median tech maturity isn’t much higher. Confidence and infrastructure are moving at two different speeds, and the gap between them is where the risk sits.

LPs want more frequent reporting. Standards bodies are moving. The teams doing the work are already stretched thin, running quarterly-era processes against a market that expects continuous answers. This is a problem that’s already showing up in how valuation teams spend their days.

Here’s what 1,321 practitioners across 91 countries told us about where things actually stand, and what the data says needs to happen next.

Key Stats

59% Name data quality and availability as the single biggest barrier to higher-frequency valuation. The gap isn’t ambition. It’s infrastructure.

74% Spend most of their time collecting data or writing reports, not exercising judgment. AI is aimed exactly where the time goes.

4.9/10 Median self-reported AI maturity across the valuation profession. Confidence currently rests on manual process, not technology (Insights from The Valuation Pulse).

50% Say data extraction and structuring is where AI is most useful today. Trust drops the closer AI gets to the valuation conclusion.

What’s Inside

01 — The market has already shifted Continuous, on-demand valuation is no longer the exception. What that shift is already costing teams.

02 — AI Is Already in the Pipeline. The Controls Aren’t. Where adoption has outpaced governance, and what that means for the 2028 standards deadline.

03 — What Practitioners Say Is Holding Them Back Three independent data sources point to the same root cause. It isn’t the one you’d guess.

04 — The valuation professional’s role is changing Not disappearing — shifting from producer to orchestrator. What that looks like day to day.

05 — The Clock Is Already Ticking What to build before the 2028 deadline arrives, and in what order.

Firms that continue to run AI-assisted workflows without the governance architecture to support them are not simply falling behind — they are accumulating regulatory, audit, and fiduciary exposure that will become harder to unwind as standards tighten and LP scrutiny intensifies.
